Canoe/Kayak Sprinters were treated to perfect conditions on the first day of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) at the Penrith International Regatta Centre.
Queensland pair Bill Bain and Jordan Wood claimed Australia's first gold medal of the AYOF, in the MK2 1000m. The duo paddled their way to victory in a time of 3:25, ahead of New Zealand and Hungary.
In the MK1 1000m, Bill Bain, Jordan Wood, Sean Lohse and Peter Elford look set to dominate, with all four progressing through to the finals later this afternoon.
Australia got off to a great start in the WK2 500m, with Shannon Reynolds and Coco Howcroft winning their heat in a time of 1:52. They qualified third fastest for the final behind China and New Zealand.
Teammates Madison Davies, Rebecca Mann, Tara McAleenan and Deandra Godoy will also join Reynolds and Howcroft in the WK2 500m final.
Both Howcroft and Godoy showcased their talents in the semi-finals for the WK1 500m, with Godoy coming second to New Zealander Danielle Currie and Howcroft placing seventh.
